About this trip

This trekking route between Chamonix and Zermatt is surely one of the most spectacular and remarkable Alpine hikes linking two mountaineering capitals.

From Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn, this route allows you to discover an impressive portion of the Alps with more than 40 peaks above 4,000 metres (13,125 ft), interspersed with green mountain pastures, typical villages and daily pass crossings, all in the vicinity of glaciers and the highest Alpine peaks in the background.

DAY 1: FROM AROLLA TO LAC DE MOIRY
6 hours walking time - Night in an inn with luggage - 1,250 m (4,100 ft) ascent / 700 m (2,300 ft) descent
You will meet at 9am in the hamlet of Villa just after La Sage in the Val d'Herens. Departure briefing and loading of your personal belongings, which will follow you during your trip.

You will then ease in to your hike towards the Col Torrent at 2,916 m (9,570 ft). There is a magnificent view over the Pennine Alps from the col! You will then embark on the descent to the Lac de Moiry via the Lac des Autannes.
DAY 2: FROM LAC DE MOIRY TO THE TURTMANNHÜTTE
8 hours walking time - 30-minute transfer - Night in a refuge without luggage - 1,700 m (5,575 ft) ascent / 700 m (2,300 ft) descent
After an early morning transfer to the Zinal valley, you will set off to climb up to the Col de la Forcletta at 2,874 m (9,430 ft), which marks the passage into the Turtmann valley, undoubtedly the most unspoilt valley in the Valais.

You will then descend to the Alpine meadows before making a final ascent to the Turtmannhütte refuge, where time seems to have stood still.
DAY 3: ABOVE 3,000 M (9,845 ft)!
6 hours walking time - Night in a refuge without luggage - 900 m (2,950 ft) ascent / 700 m (2,300 ft) descent (Barrhorn: +/- 300 m / 985 ft)
Today you will set off for the highest pass on this trek between Chamonix and Zermatt: Schöllijoch pass at 3,343 m (10,970 ft) in a rocky setting at the gateway to the high mountains.

If conditions allow, you may have the chance to climb the Barrhorn (3,610 m / 11,845 ft) from here. From the pass, you head into the Zermatt valley to reach the Topalihütte refuge. The Matterhorn is getting closer!

DAY 4: TOPALIHUTTE - RANDA
6 hours walking time - Night in an inn with luggage - 600 m (1,970 ft) ascent / 1,800 m (5,905 ft) descent
Today you will cross the valley and stay high under the Bishorn and Weisshorn peaks, which tower above you at over 4,000 m (13,125 ft), before descending to Randa where you will spend the night.
DAY 5: RANDA - TASCHHUTTE
7 hours walking time - Night in a refuge without luggage - 1,600 m (5,250 ft) ascent / 300 m (985 ft) descent
Today you will cross the valley to reach a magnificent high-level traverse that offers fabulous panoramas of the peaks over 4,000 m (13,125 ft) in the area, before embarking on a climb up to the Täschhütte refuge, where you will spend one last night in a spectacular setting.

DAY 6: ZERMATT, HERE WE COME!
5 hours walking time - 500 m (1,640 ft) ascent / 1,600 m (5,250 ft) descent
On the last day of this magnificent adventure, you will retrace your steps to the Europaweghütte, from where you will set out on the path to Zermatt via a traverse in a spectacular setting, surrounded by the peaks over 4,000 m (13,125 ft) in the area.

You will arrive in Zermatt on foot in the early afternoon to enjoy the surroundings and organise your return.

Jour 7 : du lac de Roue au refuge de Furfande
6 heures de marche - Nuit en refuge sans les bagages - D+ 900 m / D- 700 m
Aujourd’hui, le petit lac de Roue sera une première récompense pour se mettre ensuite en route vers la vallée d’Arvieux. Vous vous engagerez dans une belle montée vers le col de Furfande (2500 m). Enfin, le refuge de Furfande sera à deux pas et vous prendrez plaisir à découvrir les nombreuses granges qui parsèment l’alpage. Cette dernière soirée en montagne ne pourrait pas être plus féérique !
Jour 8 : Et la boucle est bouclée
5 heures 30 de marche - D+ 1070 m / D- 1700 m
Ce Grand Tour du Queyras touche à sa fin mais avant vous profiterez d’une dernière belle journée de marche ! En effet, vous entamerez la journée en descendant vers le beau pont de Bramousse. Ce sera ensuite votre dernier col, celui de Bramousse (2251 m). Profitez de la vue. Vous apercevrez d’ailleurs Ceillac en contrebas, de quoi se rendre compte du chemin parcouru ! Enfin, dernière descente pour une arrivée au village en fin d’après-midi. Vous aurez l’occasion d’échanger une dernière fois avec le groupe. Le retour à la maison sera sûrement empreint de nombreux souvenirs.

Temperatures vary according to the altitude. It can get very hot in the valley in the summer and cold up at the top. The wind can also make it feel colder.

Luggage transfer on days 2, 3 and 5.

Meet at 9am in the hamlet of Villa just after La Sage in the Val d’Herens.

Transport to and from the meeting point on the first and last day is not included. We can organise your return transfer from Zermatt: optional and on request.

Picnics at lunchtime. Breakfasts and evening meals are taken in the accommodation or prepared by our team. Snacks are provided but you can also bring your own favourite snacks.

2 nights in inns and 3 nights in refuges.

No compulsory vaccines.

We strongly recommend that you make sure you are up to date with the standard vaccinations: diphtheria-tetanus-poliomyelitis, whooping cough, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.

We recommend that you have a check-up with your dentist before you leave.

No visa is required for French nationals and citizens of bordering countries.

BUDGET, CURRENCY AND TIPS
Meals, except for supplements (cold drinks, snacks, etc.) and accommodation are included in the price of the stay. Showers are included in the accommodation. In the Täschhütte and Topali refuges, water is available at a charge and in the form of water bottles. We provide 1 bottle of water for 2 people in each of these accommodations. Tipping is not mandatory and should reflect your satisfaction with the team.

It is essential that you check and ensure that you have insurance cover for mountain rescue costs. If this is the case, you must provide us with the following information prior to your departure on the trek:

A certificate from the insurance company stating that mountain rescue costs are covered.

The contract number and telephone number of the assistance centre.

Be aware of the restrictive clauses contained in certain insurance policies (particularly those linked to bank cards such as Visa Premier, Gold or others), for example mountain insurance restricted to snow activities and altitude sickness not recognised as an illness requiring repatriation, resulting in refusal to repatriate.
